Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)
Common Experiences
TSW can be an incredibly distressing and isolating experience. You may be dealing with burning, flaking, itching or weeping skin, intense redness, swelling, and unpredictable flare-ups. It might affect your sleep, relationships, work, and sense of identity. You may feel constantly hyper-aware of how you look or whether people are staring.
On top of the physical symptoms, the emotional toll can be heavy: feeling exhausted, irritable, overwhelmed, and unsure if things will ever get better. You might feel angry about the impact steroids have had, disbelieved by professionals, or dismissed when seeking help. This experience can shake your trust in your body and in the medical system.

How we could work together
Support for Topical Steroid Withdrawal is grounded in validation, collaboration and psychological understanding. TSW can affect far more than just the skin, often impacting confidence, identity, relationships, sleep, emotional wellbeing and day-to-day functioning. Many people find themselves stuck in cycles of fear, hypervigilance, overwhelm, isolation or constantly monitoring symptoms, whilst also trying to cope with uncertainty, exhaustion and feeling misunderstood by others or let down by professionals.
Using CBT, we will look at the thoughts, behaviours and coping patterns that may be unintentionally increasing distress or keeping you feeling stuck. This might include catastrophising, reassurance seeking, excessive researching, comparing your healing to others, withdrawing socially, masking distress or becoming trapped in cycles of hopelessness and fear. Together, we may work on building tolerance for uncertainty, reducing shame and self-criticism, managing anxiety more effectively, reconnecting with your identity beyond TSW, and developing coping strategies that feel sustainable during recovery.
Therapy aims to help you feel more emotionally supported, less alone and more able to cope with the ups and downs of healing. Many people describe feeling calmer, more grounded and less consumed by fear or hopelessness over time. Alongside practical coping tools and emotional support, the work focuses on helping you feel more confident navigating recovery, more connected to yourself and others, and less trapped in survival mode day-to-day.

TSW Wellbeing MOT
Many people with Topical Steroid Withdrawal feel unsure about where to start with therapy. You may know you are struggling emotionally, but not feel ready for ongoing sessions, or simply want a clearer understanding of how TSW is affecting your wellbeing before deciding what support would help most. The TSW Wellbeing MOT is designed as a structured and compassionate starting point, helping you step back, make sense of what has been happening, and create a more informed plan for moving forward.
1. Complete Your TSW Wellbeing Questionaire
You will complete a detailed reflective questionnaire exploring the emotional and psychological impact TSW may be having on your life. This includes areas such as anxiety, overwhelm, hypervigilance, sleep, burnout, fear around flares or healing, coping strategies, relationships, self-esteem, identity and day-to-day functioning, alongside standardised wellbeing measures.
2. Personalised Clinical Review & Written Report
I will carefully review your responses and create a personalised written report identifying the key patterns, pressures and coping strategies that may be keeping things difficult. Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, the report aims to help make sense of the emotional impact of TSW, highlight recurring cycles such as fear, monitoring or hopelessness, identify strengths and protective factors, and suggest practical areas that may support coping and recovery moving forward.
3. Attend Feedback Session
We will then meet for a 50-minute feedback session to explore the report together in more detail. This is an opportunity to ask questions, reflect on what resonated, develop a clearer understanding of your experiences, and discuss practical next steps, coping strategies or therapy recommendations tailored to your individual needs.
Please click below to book your session, or if you cannot find an availability to suit you please drop me a message and we can get something arranged that works for you. Once booked, I will send across your questionaire.
